He also founded Estimize, a crowdsourced financial-estimates platform, in 2011 and led it until its 2021 merger with ExtractAlpha.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-6elneoqmcq)[\\[2\\]](#cite-id-68ldwfqbhj)[\\[3\\]](#cite-id-acu5fz6uh5)\n\n## Early Life and Education\n\nDrogen studied political science at the University of San Diego from 2004 to 2006 and at Hunter College from 2006 to 2008.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-6elneoqmcq)[\\[3\\]](#cite-id-acu5fz6uh5)\n\n## Career\n\n### Early Investment and Product Roles\n\nDrogen began his investment career at Geller Capital Management, where he worked as an analyst and trader from June 2006 to March 2009. His work included quantitative, technical, and fundamental equity research, trading, portfolio management, and risk management. He has identified David Geller as an important mentor.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-6elneoqmcq)[\\[4\\]](#cite-id-fpgw64zzip)\n\nIn April 2009, Drogen founded Surfview Capital, a quantitative investment-management firm, and served as its chief investment officer until March 2011. He said Surfview adapted a strategy he had run at Geller Capital, concentrating on higher-growth, higher-beta stocks while applying tighter risk management. He described its approach as a hybrid of momentum and trend following. Drogen reported that the strategy returned more than 30% in each year it operated, had no negative-return quarters, and recorded a maximum drawdown of 6%.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-6elneoqmcq)[\\[3\\]](#cite-id-acu5fz6uh5)\n\nFrom July 2009 to March 2011, Drogen also worked at StockTwits in product management, business development, media, and community roles. He worked with the early StockTwits and Chart.ly communities, managed development of the Chart.ly platform, produced content for StockTwits.TV and the StockTwits Blog Network, managed the StockTwits Marketplace, and developed financial-media partnerships.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-6elneoqmcq)[\\[5\\]](#cite-id-ai0zghx4tg)\n\n### Estimize\n\nDrogen founded Estimize in 2011 and served as its chief executive officer until May 2021. The platform launched in January 2012 to collect forward-looking estimates—including earnings per share, revenue, company-specific key performance indicators, and economic indicators—from independent, buy-side and sell-side investment professionals, industry experts, private investors, students, and academics.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-6elneoqmcq)[\\[3\\]](#cite-id-acu5fz6uh5)\n\nDrogen said the platform’s collection methodology drew on research into the wisdom of crowds, public-good markets, game theory, and behavioral psychology. His profile gives two measures of its contributor base: more than 100,000 contributing analysts in its account of the research, and more than 120,000 contributors worldwide in its company description. Estimize said its community produced coverage of more than 3,000 stocks and 85 economic indicators each quarter.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-6elneoqmcq)[\\[6\\]](#cite-id-c04kc8aksx)\n\nEstimize supplied data to institutional managers through its website and real-time file transfer protocol and application programming interface feeds. Its data was also used in quantitative systematic models. The company offered screening and alerting tools and developed an in-house quantitative factor model, including models based on post-earnings drift, pre-earnings drift, and earnings revisions.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-6elneoqmcq)[\\[7\\]](#cite-id-1frvaomfn5)\n\n### Starkiller Capital\n\nDrogen joined Starkiller Capital as a general partner and chief investment officer in June 2021. Starkiller applies quantitative and fundamental methods to blockchain-based digital assets.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-6elneoqmcq)[\\[8\\]](#cite-id-o8oz146w9h)[\\[7\\]](#cite-id-1frvaomfn5)\n\nThe firm’s stated strategies include trend following in liquid tokens and market-neutral yield strategies involving [decentralized finance (DeFi)](https://iq.wiki/wiki/defi). Drogen has described the liquid-token strategy as long-flat: it can reduce exposure but does not plan to take net [short positions](https://iq.wiki/wiki/short-position), although it may hedge. Starkiller has also made or considered seed investments in scalable protocols before their tokens are listed.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-6elneoqmcq)[\\[3\\]](#cite-id-acu5fz6uh5)[\\[7\\]](#cite-id-1frvaomfn5)\n\nDrogen has described time-series and cross-sectional momentum as complementary elements of the firm’s investment process. Time-series models help determine overall portfolio exposure, while cross-sectional momentum compares assets to select those expected to outperform their peers. He began investigating time-series momentum in leading [cryptocurrencies](https://iq.wiki/wiki/cryptocurrency) in 2017, in part because he expected a rapidly growing but volatile asset class to experience severe drawdowns.[\\[7\\]](#cite-id-1frvaomfn5)\n\n### DeFi Yield and Risk Management\n\nDrogen described DeFi yield strategies as involving the supply of assets to lending, exchange, and [stablecoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/stablecoin) [liquidity pools](https://iq.wiki/wiki/liquidity-pool). In lending pools, asset holders can supply assets such as ether to protocols including [Aave](https://iq.wiki/wiki/aave), Maker, and [Compound](https://iq.wiki/wiki/compound), where [smart contracts](https://iq.wiki/wiki/smart-contract) manage pools used for collateralized loans. Suppliers may receive a share of lending spreads and, in some cases, governance-token rewards. On Uniswap, [liquidity providers](https://iq.wiki/wiki/liquidity-providers) deposit assets into trading pools and receive a proportional share of transaction fees. Drogen distinguished this activity from proof-of-stake validation, in which users lock assets to help validate transactions and earn rewards.[\\[7\\]](#cite-id-1frvaomfn5)\n\nHe characterized pool yields as potentially attractive but exposed to smart-contract hacks, [impermanent loss](https://iq.wiki/wiki/impermanent-loss), declines in pool value, and liquidity runs. He said Starkiller sought to limit concentration by keeping no more than 10% of its assets in any one pool, spreading exposure across pools, and sometimes selling governance-token rewards daily. He also described evaluating DeFi risks through factors such as a protocol’s age, audits and their authors, code review, pool size and participants, community monitoring, and the backgrounds of founders and investors.[\\[7\\]](#cite-id-1frvaomfn5)\n\nDrogen also cited centralized-exchange failures and thefts as risks, including Mt. Gox and a South African case in which operators allegedly disappeared with $1 billion in [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin). For institutional operations, he described custody as a challenge when assets move from centralized custodians to on-chain wallets. Measures he cited included whitelisted addresses and protocols and key [sharding](https://iq.wiki/wiki/sharding) through providers such as [Fireblocks](https://iq.wiki/wiki/fireblocks).[\\[7\\]](#cite-id-1frvaomfn5)\n\nIn the September 2021 interview, Drogen estimated Starkiller’s investable universe at roughly 200 to 250 assets with [market capitalizations](https://iq.wiki/wiki/market-capitalization) above about $300 million. He said the firm’s yield strategy had a capacity of about $500 million under conditions at the time, because larger positions could make it too large a participant in liquidity pools. He expected yields to compress as institutional participation grew.[\\[7\\]](#cite-id-1frvaomfn5)\n\n## Digital Asset Views\n\nDrogen said he first bought [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) in 2013 after encountering its white paper, initially to learn about the technology through direct experience. He later became interested in [Ethereum](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) in 2017 and began researching [cryptocurrency](https://iq.wiki/wiki/cryptocurrency) investment models with a friend. During the 2017 market rise, however, he considered the sector to have limited practical utility. He said he sold his holdings after a surge in [Ripple](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ripple-labs)’s price, which he viewed as fraudulent, and did not invest again until October 2020, when his momentum models turned positive. He said he then committed nearly all of his personal investable assets, excluding his house, to crypto.[[7]](#cite-id-1frvaomfn5)[[8]](#cite-id-o8oz146w9h)\n\nDrogen has described cryptocurrency as an early stage in the development of an “internet of money.” He argued that tokens can reward participation in protocols and help bootstrap network effects, liquidity, and markets. He also pointed to the ability of open-source projects to copy and modify protocols quickly, including through what he called “vampire attacks.” As an example of incentive-driven participation, he cited Hivemapper, where drivers use dashcams to contribute mapping data in exchange for a share of the protocol’s equity, as he characterized it.[[7]](#cite-id-1frvaomfn5)[[8]](#cite-id-o8oz146w9h)\n\nHe has argued that [blockchain](https://iq.wiki/wiki/blockchain) networks could reduce costs associated with economic intermediaries. In a 2024 interview, he cited credit-card fees of about 2% as a cost merchants pass on to customers and suggested that direct payments between customer and merchant wallets could reduce payment costs. He also identified potential reductions in borrowing costs as an application of the technology.[[8]](#cite-id-o8oz146w9h)\n\nDrogen has also emphasized market and protocol risks. He said crypto assets were highly correlated in 2021, partly because they served as [collateral](https://iq.wiki/wiki/collateral) for [leverage](https://iq.wiki/wiki/leverage): falling prices could trigger smart-contract [liquidations](https://iq.wiki/wiki/liquidation), adding selling pressure. He anticipated further market drawdowns of 70% to 80%, with smaller protocols potentially falling 80% to 90% when Bitcoin and ether declined less. He expected correlations might weaken as relative-value trading developed.[[7]](#cite-id-1frvaomfn5)\n\n## Regulation and Governance Views\n\nIn 2021, Drogen described the United States’ regulatory position on [cryptocurrency](https://iq.wiki/wiki/cryptocurrency) as uncertain, citing disagreement among agencies over whether crypto assets should be treated as securities, commodities, or property. He argued that regulatory pressure could push protocol teams offshore, while decentralized protocols would remain accessible to users around the world. He also noted legal and custody barriers that limited institutional firms’ ability to trade assets beyond futures markets.[[7]](#cite-id-1frvaomfn5)\n\nIn a 2024 interview, Drogen argued that decentralized protocols did not fit neatly into legal structures designed for conventional companies. He said protocols had economic interests but might lack a chief executive or conventional corporate form, and called for legal entities that could provide them with rights comparable to those of corporations. He urged Montana to consider a structure for decentralized protocols, citing Wyoming as a model, and warned that unclear rules for decentralized autonomous organizations could lead entrepreneurs to establish projects elsewhere.[[8]](#cite-id-o8oz146w9h)\n\nHe also argued that securities laws developed for traditional corporations did not adequately address decentralized protocols, which he viewed as operating under a different framework of trust. He called for Republicans and Democrats to develop securities laws that would allow financial-system projects to be built in the United States.[[8]](#cite-id-o8oz146w9h)\n\n## Other Activities and Recognition\n\nDrogen founded the Learn 2 Quant conference, a one-day seminar held from 2017 to 2018 for discretionary and systematic portfolio managers, analysts, and traders. Its program included a track on applying quantitative processes at discretionary firms and another on advanced quantitative analysis and the use of new datasets. He also served on the advisory boards of Slingshot Insights, a community that crowdsourced research questions and shared the cost of expert interviews, and Option Alpha, a platform for automated options-strategy execution.[[1]](#cite-id-6elneoqmcq)[[3]](#cite-id-acu5fz6uh5)\n\nHis listed honors include Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Finance in 2014, Entrepreneur magazine’s 100 Brilliant Companies, Goldman Sachs’ 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs, Fast Company’s Top 10 Most Innovative Companies, and Forbes’ 9 Hottest Startups of 2013.[[9]](#cite-id-qh3u045t6r)[[1]](#cite-id-6elneoqmcq)\n\nDrogen’s profile says he regularly contributes to CNBC and Bloomberg on [cryptocurrency](https://iq.wiki/wiki/cryptocurrency) and financial markets. In 2019, he made Bloomberg appearances discussing earnings, markets, and individual companies, and joined Bloomberg’s *Odd Lots* podcast for a discussion of the technology sector.[[3]](#cite-id-acu5fz6uh5)[[10]](#cite-id-m20w5prkdx)","categories":[{"id":"people","title":"people"}],"tags":[{"id":"Founder"},{"id":"Investor"}],"images":[{"id":"QmfNGPUxzqr8vibkor2vKd1dVuaX5gYrTxSa6amhjK4LM9","type":"image/jpeg, image/png"}],"media":[],"metadata":[{"id":"twitter_profile","value":"https://x.com/LDrogen"},{"id":"linkedin_profile","value":"https://www.linkedin.com/in/leighdrogen"},{"id":"references","value":"[{\"id\":\"6elneoqmcq\",\"url\":\"https://www.linkedin.com/in/leighdrogen/?isSelfProfile=false\",\"description\":\"Professional profile\",\"timestamp\":1791838919989},{\"id\":\"68ldwfqbhj\",\"url\":\"https://x.com/LDrogen\",\"description\":\"Profile on X\",\"timestamp\":1791838919989},{\"id\":\"acu5fz6uh5\",\"url\":\"https://linkedin.com/in/leighdrogen\",\"description\":\"Professional profile\",\"timestamp\":1791838919989},{\"id\":\"fpgw64zzip\",\"url\":\"https://people.equilar.com/bio/person/leigh-drogen-estimize/27173344\",\"description\":\"Equilar biography\",\"timestamp\":1791838919990},{\"id\":\"ai0zghx4tg\",\"url\":\"https://stocktwits.com/ldrogen\",\"description\":\"StockTwits profile\",\"timestamp\":1791838919990},{\"id\":\"c04kc8aksx\",\"url\":\"https://www.estimize.com/about\",\"description\":\"Estimize company overview\",\"timestamp\":1791838919990},{\"id\":\"1frvaomfn5\",\"url\":\"https://mebfaber.com/2021/09/15/e351-leigh-drogen/\",\"description\":\"Interview with Leigh Drogen\",\"timestamp\":1791838919990},{\"id\":\"o8oz146w9h\",\"url\":\"https://frontierinstitute.org/montana-blockchain-innovator-leigh-drogen/\",\"description\":\"Interview with Leigh Drogen\",\"timestamp\":1791838919990},{\"id\":\"qh3u045t6r\",\"url\":\"https://www.forbes.com/profile/leigh-drogen/\",\"description\":\"Forbes profile\",\"timestamp\":1791838919990},{\"id\":\"m20w5prkdx\",\"url\":\"https://medium.com/@LDrogen\",\"description\":\"Medium profile\",\"timestamp\":1791838919990}]"},{"id":"main-image-origin","value":"{\"imageId\":\"QmfNGPUxzqr8vibkor2vKd1dVuaX5gYrTxSa6amhjK4LM9\",\"originalId\":\"QmfNGPUxzqr8vibkor2vKd1dVuaX5gYrTxSa6amhjK4LM9\"}"},{"id":"commit-message","value":"Add the Leigh Drogen wiki"}],"events":[{"type":"DEFAULT","title":"Joined Stocktwits as Product Manager and Media Director","date":"2009-01-01","description":"Leigh Drogen joined Stocktwits as Product Manager and Media Director.","link":"https://www.finnotes.org/people/leigh-drogen","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"id":"625648e0-207a-46ac-a786-51aaa909764c"},{"type":"DEFAULT","title":"Founded Estimize","date":"2011-05-01","description":"Leigh Drogen founded Estimize.","link":"https://www.seeitmarket.com/interview-with-estimize-founder-leigh-drogen-13298/","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"id":"2867c9f4-9008-4c79-b3a3-21fc34e23052"},{"type":"DEFAULT","title":"Launched the first iteration of the Estimize platform","date":"2011-11-01","description":"Estimize launched its first platform iteration.","link":"https://www.seeitmarket.com/interview-with-estimize-founder-leigh-drogen-13298/","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"id":"d1aaaa37-5787-4558-af4a-7814c8e4fd5a"},{"type":"DEFAULT","title":"Named to Forbes 30 Under 30","date":"2014-01-01","description":"Leigh Drogen appeared on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.","link":"https://yespress.io/leigh-drogen","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"id":"c92eb0cb-e44e-4ec4-99b1-d846c1e18049"},{"type":"DEFAULT","title":"Estimize combined with ExtractAlpha; Drogen moved to an advisory role","date":"2021-05-01","description":"Estimize combined with ExtractAlpha, and Drogen moved to an advisory role.","link":"https://yespress.io/leigh-drogen","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"id":"856d7005-f731-42b8-b411-b0b08d87bac7"},{"type":"DEFAULT","title":"Starkiller Capital officially launched","date":"2021-10-01","description":"Starkiller Capital officially launched.","link":"https://frontierinstitute.org/montana-blockchain-innovator-leigh-drogen/","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"id":"a29807ea-417d-4fd0-8b7c-7d0a31318408"}],"linkedWikis":{"founders":[],"blockchains":[],"speakers":[]},"user":{"id":"0x8af7a19a26d8fbc48defb35aefb15ec8c407f889"},"author":{"id":"0x1E23b34d3106F0C1c74D17f2Cd0F65cdb039b138"},"language":"en","operator":{"id":"0x1E23b34d3106F0C1c74D17f2Cd0F65cdb039b138"}}
