It brings together builders, creators, and protocols across open web ecosystems. Its mission is to build an internet that is open source, collaborative, and economically empowering.\n\nSince Gitcoin Grants launched in early 2019, an earlier Gitcoin account reported nearly $16 million in funding for public goods, alongside $3.54 million in bounties paid to open-source developers around the world. Quadratic funding remains one of the methods in Gitcoin’s funding history, but is no longer its only approach. Gitcoin’s 2025 Gitcoin 3.0 direction emphasized problem-specific domains, community operators, and plural funding mechanisms.[[2]](#cite-id-zcxwc7kuyt)\n\n## History\n\nGitcoin originated in 2017 as a project founded by Kevin Owocki, who was interested in community organizing and funding open-source software.[[5]](#cite-id-9ppjrdticq) In a 2018 interview, Owocki recounted pitching Joe Lubin, who agreed to fund Gitcoin and bring Owocki into the ConsenSys ecosystem.[[6]](#cite-id-l7tyuzdnxh)\n\nIn its earlier account, Gitcoin described itself as a place where builders and protocols came together to develop and fund the open web, and Gitcoin Grants as the largest implementation of Quadratic Funding (QF), a method for allocating resources for public goods. Gitcoin’s 2025 direction broadened this model toward problem-specific domains, community operators, and multiple funding mechanisms.[[2]](#cite-id-zcxwc7kuyt)\n\nIn May 2025, Gitcoin sunset Grants Stack and refocused on coordinating grants rather than maintaining a single software platform and operating all rounds itself.[[2]](#cite-id-zcxwc7kuyt) A Gitcoin DAO 2026 budget proposal stated that Grants Lab dissolved in mid-2025 and Kevin Owocki returned as Executive Steward.[[4]](#cite-id-kwu0vckwjj)\n\n### Early Bounty Platform and Gitcoin Grants\nGitcoin launched in 2017 as an [Ethereum](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) bounty platform for completing GitHub issues and introduced Gitcoin Grants in early 2019 as a recurring-funding product.[[13]](#cite-id-uwewx683sh) The announcement described three use cases: paying developers to maintain repositories after bounty work; crowdfunding for open-source projects and maintainers; and public grant applications that could raise an initial portion of funding and serve as examples for grant programs.[[13]](#cite-id-uwewx683sh)\n\nGitcoin Grants used the EIP-1337 subscription standard. The mechanism used meta-transactions to enable recurring payments on behalf of a subscriber after an initial subscription confirmation.[[13]](#cite-id-uwewx683sh)[[14]](#cite-id-m3qgrkbr7s) The announcement said the product would be seeded through a $500,000 ConsenSys Grants program announced at [Devcon](https://iq.wiki/wiki/devcon) IV.[[13]](#cite-id-uwewx683sh)\n\n### Gitcoin Grants 24\nGitcoin Grants 24 (GG24), run from October through November 2025, was the first funding round under Gitcoin’s 3.0 model. It distributed more than $1.8 million across six domains. Rather than having Gitcoin centrally operate every round, community-appointed domain allocators, also described as community operators, designed, managed, and evaluated rounds within their problem areas. The round used quadratic funding, conviction voting, retroactive funding, MACI private voting, Deep Funding, and peer-reviewed hypercerts. In the round, quadratic funding matched donations with relatively greater weight for broad participation and small donations; conviction voting accumulated community support over time; and retroactive funding rewarded demonstrated work or impact. MACI (Minimum Anti-Collusion Infrastructure) used encrypted voting designed to reduce collusion. Deep Funding used prediction-market evaluations of open-source repositories, while peer-reviewed hypercerts used peer review of documented impact claims to inform funding.[[2]](#cite-id-zcxwc7kuyt)[[7]](#cite-id-8nlg96a6p9)[[8]](#cite-id-45iioxaypj)\n\nGitcoin contributed $1.175 million in matching funds, while external partners contributed about $632,500. This external co-funding and use of multiple mechanisms marked a shift from the earlier, more centralized model, which relied mostly on quadratic funding. [Across](https://iq.wiki/wiki/across) the two open-source software quadratic funding rounds operated by Giveth, 78 projects received support. About 1,300 donors contributed $36,657 in direct donations, amplified by $300,000 in matching funds.[[2]](#cite-id-zcxwc7kuyt)[[7]](#cite-id-8nlg96a6p9)\n\n### Techne and the Reboot\nBy the October 1, 2026, governance update, Gitcoin founder Kevin Owocki had named the reboot “Techne” and described it as a separate brand and initiative focused on helping people renegotiate their relationship with technology. The update said Gitcoin DAO and GTC would continue separately. It reported that Beacon, a local-events and discovery app, had reached an App Store release and held a small initial in-person test on September 26. The update reported 10 attendees from about 15 invitees, eight engaged beta testers, and five new connections.[[3]](#cite-id-a098n3mpi6)\n\nBuoy, a planned local-money pilot incorporating quadratic funding, was targeted for November 2026. Gitcoin’s standalone quadratic-funding and funding-platform bet had been folded into Buoy, while local-AGI SDK work was deferred to 2027. A Techne launch was targeted for mid-December 2026, with legal work identified as a possible source of delay.[[3]](#cite-id-a098n3mpi6)\n\nThe update also reported that Trust Graph v1 had gone live on September 15, 2026, and that the Allo.Capital wind-down was nearing completion. Allo.Capital’s wind-down was distinct from the Allo Protocol.[[3]](#cite-id-a098n3mpi6)\n\n## Governance\n\nThe DAO is the vessel for Gitcoin’s mission. It consists of community members coordinating to fund public goods and introducing the Gitcoin token (GTC) to make decisions about where to allocate resources. GTC is a [fork](https://iq.wiki/wiki/fork) of the [COMP](https://iq.wiki/wiki/comp)/[UNI](https://iq.wiki/wiki/uni) governance systems, built with a delegation prompt built into the retroactive claim process.\n\nGTC is used for governance voting and delegation over Gitcoin DAO decisions, including treasury funding and grant-round matters. From inception, Gitcoin’s DAO has overseen a community treasury of GTC tokens, along with offering a governance framework for delegates (called Gitcoin Stewards) to participate in key ecosystem decisions such as fund allocation, matching pools, and grant collusion.[[1]](#cite-id-grqsrltx5w6)\n\nGTC holders may vote directly or delegate their voting power to Gitcoin Stewards. Stewards exercise delegated voting power and participate in workstreams. Proposals include funding requests, ratification of initiatives such as grants matching, and governance changes.[[9]](#cite-id-inkyedgip8)[[10]](#cite-id-co10qpr53z)\n\nGTC’s launch allocation had a 100 million maximum supply: 15% was allocated to a retroactive [airdrop](https://iq.wiki/wiki/airdrop), 50% to the DAO treasury, and 35% to existing stakeholders. The [airdrop](https://iq.wiki/wiki/airdrop) was unlocked at launch, while the DAO and stakeholder allocations were scheduled for 24-month linear vesting. GTC’s utility is governance voting and delegation, including decisions about treasury funding and grants.[[9]](#cite-id-inkyedgip8)[[11]](#cite-id-rhwd6pk5io)[[12]](#cite-id-rh5aqhc0to)\n\nA 2026 governance discussion said the DAO and GTC would continue their existing roles through the reboot. On October 2, 2026, Kevin Owocki said there were no plans for a new token.[[3]](#cite-id-a098n3mpi6)","recentActivity":null,"operator":{"id":"0x1E23b34d3106F0C1c74D17f2Cd0F65cdb039b138"},"categories":[{"id":"organizations","title":"organizations"}],"tags":[{"id":"ResearchLab"}],"images":[{"id":"QmX8KyHpkFNpcMzqVJvTb9pYRmvCW2LK9TVsrzzhJXCzEz","type":"image/jpeg, image/png"}],"media":[{"name":"08ae419f.webp","id":"QmeB66vx38QixcNvrY7RoxihQm2zCzsgBTqRs745Zbo5BU","size":"0.017","type":null,"source":"IPFS_IMG"},{"name":"images.jpg","id":"QmbykBxuoVn9J9DgHcEnD31LPSQB1DrjFEVEYtf5n3GHLG","size":"0.008","type":null,"source":"IPFS_IMG"},{"name":"images.png","id":"QmV9o3u6GUsFWfyFCYTAHYWDDAjGceBkv6swFENe7pch4a","size":"0.002","type":null,"source":"IPFS_IMG"},{"name":"08ae419f.webp","id":"QmeB66vx38QixcNvrY7RoxihQm2zCzsgBTqRs745Zbo5BU","size":"0.017","type":null,"source":"IPFS_IMG"}],"linkedWikis":null,"events":[{"title":"Gitcoin launches as an Ethereum bounty platform","date":"2017-09-01","type":"DEFAULT","description":"Gitcoin originated in 2017 and launched as a bounty platform for open-source software issues.","link":"https://www.builtincolorado.com/articles/boulder-tech-gitcoin-open-source-software","country":"","continent":"","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"id":"25f04bae-1acb-4353-a3fb-e9b34c093a0b"},{"title":"Gitcoin Grants program launches","date":"2019-01-01","type":"DEFAULT","description":"Gitcoin introduced Grants as a recurring-funding program for open-source projects.","link":"https://gitcoin.co/blog/gitcoin-grants","country":"","continent":"","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"id":"143ba504-72a4-4004-8045-b8f0168e91a2"},{"title":"GTC distribution and GitcoinDAO launch","date":"2021-05-01","type":"DEFAULT","description":"Gitcoin retroactively distributed GTC to community members and launched GitcoinDAO.","link":"https://gov.gitcoin.co/t/a-brief-history-of-gitcoin-from-2017-2022/9431","country":"","continent":"","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"id":"98c61640-c65d-4771-801e-7e51ffdd8428"},{"title":"Grants Stack sunset","date":"2025-05-01","type":"DEFAULT","description":"Gitcoin sunset Grants Stack as it refocused on coordinating grants and domain-led funding.","link":"https://gov.gitcoin.co/t/focusing-gitcoins-future-sunsetting-grants-stack-eol-may-2025/20333/1","country":"","continent":"","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"id":"753acefd-5409-4241-bc95-305a744b0f95"},{"title":"GG24 primary quadratic-funding donation window","date":"2025-10-01","type":"MULTIDATE","description":"The primary QF donation window for the first Gitcoin 3.0 grants round;
