He has held leadership and advisory roles across [blockchain](https://iq.wiki/wiki/blockchain) ventures and completed executive education in blockchain and digital finance at Cornell University, the Wharton School, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-fgql389rbc)[\\[2\\]](#cite-id-x8jvdpoids)\n\n## Education\n\nAli earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Rutgers Business School. He completed executive education in [Blockchain](https://iq.wiki/wiki/blockchain) Essentials at Cornell University, Managing in the Global Digital Economy at the Wharton School, and [Blockchain](https://iq.wiki/wiki/blockchain) Technologies: Business Innovation and Application at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His professional profile lists him as based in Miami, Florida.[[2]](#cite-id-x8jvdpoids)\n## Career\n\nAli joined [Orion Protocol](https://iq.wiki/wiki/orion-protocol) as a strategic adviser in July 2018 and became its chief operating officer in September 2018. In a September 2024 interview, he described Orion as a response to fragmented [decentralized finance (DeFi)](https://iq.wiki/wiki/defi) liquidity: the project connected users to centralized and decentralized exchanges.[[2]](#cite-id-x8jvdpoids)[[1]](#cite-id-fgql389rbc)\n\nHis other roles have included chief executive officer of Bonsai beginning in November 2020, strategic adviser to [Paribus](https://iq.wiki/wiki/paribus) beginning that month, director at Avalaunch beginning in January 2021, and founding partner of Dominance Ventures beginning in January 2021.[[2]](#cite-id-x8jvdpoids)\n\n## Lumia\n\nAfter Orion, Ali launched [Lumia](https://iq.wiki/wiki/lumia) to address the challenge of bringing [real-world assets](https://iq.wiki/wiki/real-world-assets-rwas) (RWAs) into digital finance. He said the aim was not simply to tokenize assets, but to make tokenized assets liquid, secure, tradable, and usable in [DeFi](https://iq.wiki/wiki/defi). Lumia was described as a [Layer 2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2) network intended to let users transact with RWAs, use them as [collateral](https://iq.wiki/wiki/collateral), and incorporate them into other financial products. Examples discussed by Ali included real estate, commodities, and art. He said these applications could broaden retail access and give institutions new revenue opportunities and more efficient asset management.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-fgql389rbc)\n\nAli described HyperNodes as a central part of Lumia’s decentralization strategy. [Node](https://iq.wiki/wiki/node) operators participate through [staking](https://iq.wiki/wiki/staking) and other security mechanisms; Ali said HyperNodes were intended to support a robust, scalable network while improving security, efficiency, and the reliability of infrastructure and liquidity for the community.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-fgql389rbc)\n\nAt the time of the September 2024 interview, Lumia had integrated with [Polygon](https://iq.wiki/wiki/polygon) AggLayer. Ali said the integration was intended to improve scalability and cross-chain compatibility. He also described Lumia Stream as a capital-efficiency feature that pools liquidity from centralized and decentralized sources so it can be directed where needed, improving access to prices and liquidity.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-fgql389rbc)\n\nAli said Lumia uses zero-knowledge proofs to provide security and privacy while retaining transparency. He described the network’s Data Availability Committee (DAC) [nodes](https://iq.wiki/wiki/node) as helping ensure data availability and prevent tampering, and said the architecture was intended to help protect against fraud and support compliance solutions for institutional users.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-fgql389rbc)\n\nLumia had announced a developer grant program and was preparing a public [testnet](https://iq.wiki/wiki/testnet) campaign when Ali was interviewed in September 2024. He identified potential areas for development including decentralized applications for integrating [RWAs](https://iq.wiki/wiki/real-world-assets-rwas) into [DeFi](https://iq.wiki/wiki/defi), new [tokenization](https://iq.wiki/wiki/tokenization) methods, secure and compliant trading platforms, and tools for retail and institutional users. He cited education, regulatory compliance, and infrastructure development as challenges to making RWA use commonplace.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-fgql389rbc)\n\n## Lumia Towers\n\nAli disclosed a collaboration between [Lumia](https://iq.wiki/wiki/lumia) and [Polygon](https://iq.wiki/wiki/polygon) to develop Lumia Towers, a proposed real-estate project in Istanbul, Turkey. The plan called for two skyscrapers spanning more than 50,000 square meters and containing 300 residential and commercial units. The project was estimated at $220 million. In March 2025, Ali projected that the development would be completed and fully tokenized by the second quarter of 2026; the article described it as the world’s first crypto real-estate project.[\\[3\\]](#cite-id-ob5whjuvms)\n\nAli said the project was designed to make property ownership more accessible to retail investors. Ownership rights would be held through special purpose vehicles (SPVs), with shares in the SPVs issued on-chain as [ERC-20](https://iq.wiki/wiki/erc-20) tokens. The tokens were intended to carry governance rights, including votes on property-use decisions such as whether to rent or sell. Ali said the tokens would launch on Lumia Chain to facilitate access for retail investors. He also disclosed plans to extend the Lumia Towers model to the Middle East and North Africa, the United States, and Europe.[\\[3\\]](#cite-id-ob5whjuvms)","categories":[{"id":"people","title":"people"}],"tags":[{"id":"Founder"},{"id":"Advisor"}],"images":[{"id":"QmNQeggmcE27UYsv4LhP1KjgnSb38YPjznWr7PoGC2rhYt","type":"image/jpeg, image/png"}],"media":[],"metadata":[{"id":"references","value":"[{\"id\":\"fgql389rbc\",\"url\":\"https://hackernoon.com/bridging-real-world-assets-and-defi-an-interview-with-lumia-co-founder-kal-ali\",\"description\":\"Interview with Lumia co-founder Kal Ali\",\"timestamp\":1792098794490},{\"id\":\"x8jvdpoids\",\"url\":\"https://www.linkedin.com/in/kal-ali\",\"description\":\"Kal Ali’s professional profile\",\"timestamp\":1792098794490},{\"id\":\"ob5whjuvms\",\"url\":\"https://www.bitget.com/news/detail/12560604642375\",\"description\":\"Report on Lumia Towers\",\"timestamp\":1792098794490}]"},{"id":"main-image-origin","value":"{\"imageId\":\"QmNQeggmcE27UYsv4LhP1KjgnSb38YPjznWr7PoGC2rhYt\",\"originalId\":\"QmNQeggmcE27UYsv4LhP1KjgnSb38YPjznWr7PoGC2rhYt\"}"},{"id":"twitter_profile","value":"https://x.com/alt_street_bets"},{"id":"linkedin_profile","value":"https://www.linkedin.com/in/kal-ali/"},{"id":"commit-message","value":"Add Kal Ali wiki"}],"events":[{"title":"Launched Lumia, a Layer 2 network focused on real-world assets","date":"2024-10-01","type":"DEFAULT","description":"Lumia transitioned from Orion Protocol’s earlier Ethereum-based application to its own Layer 2 network.","link":"https://www.bybit.com/en/learn/defi/what-is-lumia-token","country":"","continent":"","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"id":"986ce0e3-7ee3-41a7-b202-0532926e7fdd"}],"linkedWikis":{"founders":[],"blockchains":[],"speakers":[]},"user":{"id":"0x8af7a19a26d8fbc48defb35aefb15ec8c407f889"},"author":{"id":"0xd5893989b9952c6568a99F854795AcC5Ae480D56"},"language":"en","operator":{"id":"0xd5893989b9952c6568a99F854795AcC5Ae480D56"}}
