BIP 22 added protocol support for long polling, a technique that allows a miner to be notified as soon as a new [block](https://iq.wiki/wiki/block) template becomes available instead of repeatedly querying for one.[[1]](#cite-id-7zgsbd6gfq) BIP 23 extended this approach by allowing miners to check the basic validity of their next [block](https://iq.wiki/wiki/block) before expending computational work on it, reducing the risk of accidental [hard forks](https://iq.wiki/wiki/hard-fork) or of [mining](https://iq.wiki/wiki/mining) invalid [blocks](https://iq.wiki/wiki/block).[[1]](#cite-id-7zgsbd6gfq) \n\nDashjr also maintains [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) Knots, an alternative Bitcoin [node](https://iq.wiki/wiki/node) implementation. In September 2026 he highlighted the release of Bitcoin Knots version 29.4.2.knots20260508 as further mitigating an ongoing attack on the network and urged users to read the release notes and verify their downloads before installing.[[2]](#cite-id-pzu03jomdn)\n\n### Mining Software and Pools\nBeyond protocol development, Dashjr has been involved in the tooling and infrastructure of [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) [mining](https://iq.wiki/wiki/mining). In 2014 he released BFGMiner, [mining](https://iq.wiki/wiki/mining) software that supports a wide range of [mining](https://iq.wiki/wiki/mining) hardware and runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux; weusecoins describes it as one of the most widely used implementations of [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) mining software.[[1]](#cite-id-7zgsbd6gfq)\n\nHe also founded Eligius, described as one of the first [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) [mining pools](https://iq.wiki/wiki/mining-pool). Eligius operates as an anonymous pool that requires no registration.[[1]](#cite-id-7zgsbd6gfq) Dashjr has continued to hold operational roles in mining. He served as chair and chief technology officer of the [mining pool](https://iq.wiki/wiki/mining-pool) Ocean, and he identifies himself as the chief executive officer of CONVOY\\_Mining.[[6]](#cite-id-nncc7n5uta)[[2]](#cite-id-pzu03jomdn)\n\nIn August 2026 Ocean and Dashjr announced that he had separated from the pool by mutual agreement, resigning as chairman, chief technology officer, and director while the company repurchased his equity stake, citing different views on the future of [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) mining following protocol developments.[[5]](#cite-id-w04k5hh45f)[[7]](#cite-id-2h3qwzoz2q) Following this departure, he stated that he would pursue a new mining venture called CONVOY/Convoy, framed as continuing efforts to decentralize Bitcoin mining.[[5]](#cite-id-w04k5hh45f)[[7]](#cite-id-2h3qwzoz2q) \n\n### Role as BIP Editor\nFor many years Dashjr served as an editor of the [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) Improvement Proposals, the formal process by which changes to [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) are documented and standardized, and he maintained the BIPs repository on GitHub.[[1]](#cite-id-7zgsbd6gfq) The editor role carries authority over assigning BIP numbers and merging changes into the shared repository, and additional BIP editors began serving alongside him in April 2024.\n\nIn 2026 [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) developer Mark Erhardt filed a motion documenting what he described as Dashjr's declining participation in that role. According to Erhardt, since the additional editors began serving in April 2024, Dashjr had left fewer than 1% of the BIP editor comments in the repository, and the merge action tied to the disputed proposal was his first merge since May 2024.[[3]](#cite-id-WtKQbbR5CzoMHFoJ) \n\n#### BIP-110 and Removal as Editor\nDashjr was one of the most prominent developers driving [BIP-110](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bip-110), a controversial soft-fork proposal that sought to temporarily restrict use of the [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) network for non-financial purposes. The proposal would have established a breakaway [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) chain that limited the storing of non-financial data such as images and text, a practice that became widespread following the arrival of the Ordinals protocol in 2023. During its signaling period, however, [BIP-110](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bip-110) attracted support from only around 2.6% of miners, well below the 55% threshold, and the forked chain it created stalled after two [blocks](https://iq.wiki/wiki/block) while the main [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) chain continued uninterrupted.\n\nShortly after the attempt stalled, a motion calling for Dashjr's removal as a BIP editor was filed on August 9, 2026, and was subsequently forwarded and carried. He was accused of abusing his editorial authority, including attempting to assign BIP-110 a BIP number before it had been discussed and quickly merging an update into the repository without following due process.[[4]](#cite-id-Rz8xppL8DLZcCWm0) \n\nDashjr responded on X, calling his removal \"_an abuse of power_.\" He also announced that he was taking a sabbatical from his role as chair and chief technology officer of [Ocean](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ocean-protocol), stating that he would turn his immediate focus to working on [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) and open-source projects to support [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin).[[3]](#cite-id-WtKQbbR5CzoMHFoJ) \n\nIn the period that followed, Dashjr publicly documented what he described as contentious chain events. In a September 5th post he stated that a chain he called \"Spamcoin\" had forked off from [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) on August 8 in a contentious hard-fork attempt that removed or violated BIP-110 rules, and that on August 19th a project he referred to as \"Purity\" did the same by removing or replacing the difficulty adjustment algorithm (DAA); he asserted that [Bitcoin](https://iq.wiki/wiki/bitcoin) continued on in both cases.[[2]](#cite-id-pzu03jomdn) He has also discussed proposals related to coinbase maturity — the rule that newly mined bitcoins cannot be spent for their first 100 [blocks](https://iq.wiki/wiki/block) — including a soft [fork](https://iq.wiki/wiki/fork) to lengthen that maturity period, framing such changes as ways to deter large batches of mined coins from being spent quickly.[[2]](#cite-id-pzu03jomdn)[[3]](#cite-id-WtKQbbR5CzoMHFoJ) In September 2026 he initiated public discussion of temporary ideas such as lengthening coinbase maturity or setting the block subsidy to zero for a month to discourage miners he viewed as harming decentralization, emphasizing that these were exploratory suggestions rather than final or agreed changes.[[2]](#cite-id-pzu03jomdn)[[8]](#cite-id-lzje1l4xch)","recentActivity":null,"operator":{"id":"0x1E23b34d3106F0C1c74D17f2Cd0F65cdb039b138"},"categories":[{"id":"people","title":"People in crypto"}],"tags":[{"id":"Bitcoin"},{"id":"Developer"},{"id":"Founder"}],"images":[{"id":"QmQYaZmU4cmsVQECCh8AAb2ff64dvW5mZtw8nrPJd1Z9cj","type":"image/jpeg, image/png"}],"media":[],"linkedWikis":{"founders":[],"blockchains":[],"speakers":[]},"events":[{"id":"fdb55170-556b-4750-bd20-927cece404a8","type":"DEFAULT","date":"2020-09-01","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"country":null,"continent":null,"title":"Pinned post describing community-paid Bitcoin development and funding channels","description":"Pinned post describing community-paid Bitcoin development and funding channels.","link":null},{"id":"567964f6-0857-4615-a026-00f6beab5093","type":"DEFAULT","date":"2026-08-01","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"country":null,"continent":null,"title":"Motion filed to remove Dashjr as BIP editor","description":"Motion filed to remove Luke Dashjr as a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) editor.","link":null},{"id":"d3a630ce-ea42-4ad4-b01d-5a76e692d8bd","type":"DEFAULT","date":"2026-08-01","multiDateStart":null,"multiDateEnd":null,"country":null,"continent":null,"title":"Removed as Bitcoin BIP editor","description":"Luke Dashjr removed from the role of Bitcoin BIP editor.","link":null}],"founderWikis":[],"blockchainWikis":[],"metadata":[{"id":"github_profile","value":"https://github.com/luke-jr"},{"id":"website","value":"https://luke.dashjr.org/"},{"id":"twitter_profile","value":"https://x.com/LukeDashjr"},{"id":"linkedin_profile","value":"https://www.linkedin.com/in/lukedashjr"},{"id":"main-image-origin","value":"{\"imageId\":\"QmQYaZmU4cmsVQECCh8AAb2ff64dvW5mZtw8nrPJd1Z9cj\",\"originalId\":\"QmWPcLLQYtJovGuccaMiPGei2erW5SL7adbDhJAsg2anXK\"}"},{"id":"references","value":"[{\"id\":\"7zgsbd6gfq\",\"description\":\"weusecoins -
