With a community-driven governance model, Swell empowers its users to shape the protocol’s future through voting on important decisions. It prioritizes security, conducting continuous audits, and offering bug bounties to ensure robust development. [\\[1\\]](#cite-id-ykmcjnldiop)[\\[2\\]](#cite-id-5r9emnc0wtg)\n\nSwell simplifies the [staking](https://iq.wiki/wiki/staking) process, allowing users to [stake](https://iq.wiki/wiki/staking) [ETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) and receive [swETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/swell-ethereum-sweth), an interest-bearing token while retaining [liquidity](https://iq.wiki/wiki/pol-proof-of-liquidity) for other [DeFi](https://iq.wiki/wiki/defi) opportunities. The platform’s user-friendly interface facilitates easy participation in [staking](https://iq.wiki/wiki/staking): users [stake](https://iq.wiki/wiki/staking) [ETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) directly through the platform, start earning rewards immediately, and can further maximize returns by depositing [swETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/swell-ethereum-sweth) into upcoming yield-optimized vaults. Additionally, the Swell [DAO](https://iq.wiki/wiki/dao) fosters community involvement, enabling users to contribute to the ecosystem’s development and governance through collaborative decision-making. Swell aims to foster a more secure, decentralized, and transparent financial future that promotes economic freedom without discrimination or censorship. Swell focuses on advancing liquid staking as an important component of [decentralized finance (DeFi)](https://iq.wiki/wiki/defi), ensuring it is fully integrated with the Ethereum ecosystem and adaptable for composability. [\\[1\\]](#cite-id-ykmcjnldiop)\n\n### Swell Voyage\n\nIn May 2023, Swell Labs launched the Swell Voyage campaign, representing Swell’s progression from its inception to a mature state. The campaign consists of four chapters: Sunlight Zone, Twilight Zone, Midnight Zone, and Swell City, during which governance rights will be gradually decentralized and extended to early community participants. Users can gather pearls corresponding to portions of the $SWELL airdrop during the campaign. \n\nThese pearls will grant holders governance tokens upon reaching the final chapter of the Voyage. Each Voyage chapter has different objectives, but participants can continue [staking](https://iq.wiki/wiki/staking) and providing liquidity throughout the journey to maximize pearl collection. As the journey progresses, individuals can contribute to developing a liquid staking token benefiting Swell Aquanauts, Swell’s Discord community, DeFi, and the broader Ethereum ecosystem. [\\[3\\]](#cite-id-glbrtmo1ehl)[\\[4\\]](#cite-id-gf0k5owmwie)\n\n### Swell L2\n\nSwell [L2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2) is a [ZK](https://iq.wiki/wiki/zero-knowledge-proofs-zkps)-validium built on the [Polygon](https://iq.wiki/wiki/polygon) CDK, focusing on restaking. Inspired by the rise of restaking protocols like [EigenLayer](https://iq.wiki/wiki/eigenlayer) and [Symbiotic](https://iq.wiki/wiki/symbiotic), Swell launched rswETH, its own restaked liquid representative token (LRT), following the strong adoption of [swETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/swell-ethereum-sweth) on [EigenLayer](https://iq.wiki/wiki/eigenlayer). \n\nSwell realized that the security behind its LRT could be used to decentralize and scale an [L2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2) modularly, where specialized providers manage each component. \n\nThis [L2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2) is secured by three tokens—SWELL, swBTC, and rswETH—driving value toward Swell’s [liquid staking](https://iq.wiki/wiki/liquid-staking) and restaking products while supporting the next generation of [DeFi](https://iq.wiki/wiki/defi) on [Layer 2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2). Using liquid restaked tokens (LRTs) to secure the infrastructure supporting the [rollup](https://iq.wiki/wiki/rollup) and the chain, PoR enhances capital efficiency and allows stakers to contribute to network security while participating in the ecosystem. \n\nPoR aligns incentives across [validators](https://iq.wiki/wiki/validator), [node](https://iq.wiki/wiki/node) operators, builders, and users, deepening [liquidity](https://iq.wiki/wiki/pol-protocol-owned-liquidity) and boosting security. [\\[16\\]](#cite-id-quyprsvbib)\n\nStakers deposit assets tokenized into LRTs that generate [staking](https://iq.wiki/wiki/staking) rewards and remain liquid for use in infrastructure services, [DeFi](https://iq.wiki/wiki/defi), and cross-chain protocols. On-chain activity generates revenue and supports [validators](https://iq.wiki/wiki/validator), relayers, [node](https://iq.wiki/wiki/node) operators, and sequencers while accruing yield to Swell assets. \n\nAs network activity grows, [liquidity](https://iq.wiki/wiki/pol-protocol-owned-liquidity) deepens, and [crypto](https://iq.wiki/wiki/cryptocurrency)-economic security strengthens, benefiting [dApps](https://iq.wiki/wiki/decentralized-application) and attracting more builders and users. [\\[16\\]](#cite-id-quyprsvbib)\n\nPoR’s modular architecture allows Swell [L2’s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2) infrastructure to evolve, making it more decentralized and efficient. Securing key components with restaked assets, the network remains aligned with Ethereum's security, avoiding issues tied to centralized infrastructure. PoR also maximizes asset productivity by passing network-generated revenue to users as restaking yield, fostering innovation, and unlocking [liquidity](https://iq.wiki/wiki/pol-protocol-owned-liquidity) for [dApps](https://iq.wiki/wiki/decentralized-application) that leverage Swell [L2’s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2) decentralized services and [Ethereum's](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) security. [\\[16\\]](#cite-id-quyprsvbib)\n\n## Swell Tokens\n\n### swETH Token\n\nSwell Ether (swETH) is a [liquid staking](https://iq.wiki/wiki/liquid-staking) token (LST) on the Swell protocol, representing ETH staked on the Ethereum network. [Chainlink Proof of Reserves](https://iq.wiki/wiki/chainlink) validates the underlying ETH. swETH functions as a repricing token, increasing in value over time as staking rewards accumulate. [\\[5\\]](#cite-id-vhxazlc1rqb)\n\n### rswETH\n\nLaunched January 29, 2024, rswETH, or Restaked Swell ETH, is an [ERC-20](https://iq.wiki/wiki/erc-20) Liquid Restaking Token (LRT) designed to offer liquidity to users looking to “restake” their ETH in restaking protocols like [EigenLayer](https://iq.wiki/wiki/eigenlayer) without locking their restaked ETH. It functions as a repricing token, representing a user’s yield-bearing ETH utilized by [validators](https://iq.wiki/wiki/validator) to validate transactions on the [Ethereum](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) [blockchain](https://iq.wiki/wiki/blockchain). [\\[1\\]](#cite-id-ykmcjnldiop)[\\[6\\]](#cite-id-vepavpoj7s)[\\[7\\]](#cite-id-17nb9r2kt2s)\n\nAnnounced on April 17th, 2024, rswETH v2 introduces composability between supported [Liquid Staking](https://iq.wiki/wiki/liquid-staking) Tokens (LSTs) and rswETH. With this update, [swETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/swell-ethereum-sweth) and other LSTs like [stETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/lido-staked-ethereum-steth) can be used as [collateral](https://iq.wiki/wiki/collateral) for [minting](https://iq.wiki/wiki/minting) rswETH. This allows [swETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/swell-ethereum-sweth) holders to obtain rswETH efficiently without relying on the secondary market. [\\[12\\]](#cite-id-9u3g5zt65nw)\n\nrswETH v2 will automatically delegate [ETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) and LSTs restaked via rswETH to [EigenLayer](https://iq.wiki/wiki/eigenlayer) AVS Operators. \n\nThis ensures reputable operators manage assets, and restakers earn rewards from across the ecosystem, including real restaking yield (once enabled), potential AVS [airdrops](https://iq.wiki/wiki/airdrop), and additional rewards from depositing rswETH in Swell [L2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2). Users can withdraw rswETH through the Swell app at the primary market rate, reducing dependence on the secondary market and enhancing its stability. \n\nUntil this feature is live, rswETH can be swapped back to [ETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) on a [DEX](https://iq.wiki/wiki/decentralized-exchange) or aggregator. The staked assets backing rswETH can be verified using [Chainlink](https://iq.wiki/wiki/chainlink) Proof of Reserve. [\\[12\\]](#cite-id-9u3g5zt65nw)\n\nThe enhanced rswETH will be an important component of Tri-Staking on Swell [L2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2), allowing SWELL, [ALT](https://iq.wiki/wiki/altlayer), and rswETH to secure Swell [L2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2) AVS via [AltLayer’s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/altlayer) AltVault. rswETH will also serve as the native [gas](https://iq.wiki/wiki/gas) token of Swell [L2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2), providing increased utility and optimizing user experience and [gas](https://iq.wiki/wiki/gas) expenditure as holdings appreciate through [staking](https://iq.wiki/wiki/staking) and restaking rewards. SWELL also functions as the gas token for Swell [L2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2) transactions. SWELL has a total supply of 10B tokens, with 8.5% allocated to the Voyage [airdrop](https://iq.wiki/wiki/airdrop). As Swell was still new to the LST space, the opportunity existed to bootstrap liquidity without a [governance token](https://iq.wiki/wiki/governance-tokens). The decision to collaborate with Bunni was influenced by factors such as its status as a newer protocol and the relatively lower valuation of veLIT. This strategic partnership allowed for a more prominent position to be maintained with emissions directed back, thereby enhancing liquidity without needing a governance token. [\\[8\\]](#cite-id-bgtec330wib)\n\n### Chainlink\n\nOn May 16, 2023, Swell integrated [Chainlink Proof of Reserve (PoR)](https://iq.wiki/wiki/chainlink) on [Ethereum](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum), ensuring that [swETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/swell-ethereum-sweth) tokens were fully backed by [staked](https://iq.wiki/wiki/staking) [ETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) on a 1:1 basis. The integration of [Chainlink PoR](https://iq.wiki/wiki/chainlink) offered a monitoring service for the [ETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) reserves backing [swETH](https://iq.wiki/wiki/swell-ethereum-sweth), providing users with reliable and timely updates. This initiative aimed to enhance user confidence and transparency regarding the full backing of [Ethereum’s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) Beacon chain reserves. Users were able to access the [Proof of Reserve](https://iq.wiki/wiki/chainlink) feed for verification purposes. [\\[9\\]](#cite-id-wzsd6f1w8zn)\n\n> Chainlink Proof of Reserve - helps us provide our users with unmatched transparency into the reserves backing swETH Users now have a one-stop destination for checking near real-time updates on swETH reserve balances, providing peace of mind that every token is backed 1:1 by staked ETH - Daniel Dizon - Co-Founder and CEO of Swell Network.\n\nIn February 2024, Swell joined [Chainlink’s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/chainlink) BUILD program to leverage [Chainlink’s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/chainlink) [oracle](https://iq.wiki/wiki/oracle) infrastructure, aiming to enhance security and reliability. As a member of BUILD, Swell Network gained access to various benefits, such as [Chainlink’s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/chainlink) Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) for secure cross-chain transfers, [Chainlink Proof of Reserve](https://iq.wiki/wiki/chainlink) for validating cross-chain reserves, Automation for [smart contract](https://iq.wiki/wiki/smart-contract) triggers, Price Feeds for accurate market data, Functions for off-chain data and custom compute, and early access to new Chainlink product releases. In return for these services, Swell Network committed to gradually making a portion of its native token supply available to [Chainlink](https://iq.wiki/wiki/chainlink) service providers, including stakers. This reciprocal arrangement facilitated mutual support between both communities. [\\[10\\]](#cite-id-6hqu2rkqmp7)\n\n> “We’re excited to join the Chainlink - BUILD program as the Chainlink Network’s industry-standard services are essential to helping Swell support the adoption of liquid staking in DeFi. \n> We look forward to continuing our collaboration together and we welcome the passionate Chainlink community into the Swell Network ecosystem.” - Daniel Dizon, Co-Founder and CEO of Swell Network.\n\n### AltLayer\n\nOn March 13th, 2024, Swell partnered with [AltLayer](https://iq.wiki/wiki/altlayer) and EigenDA to launch its [Layer 2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2) [rollup](https://iq.wiki/wiki/rollup) for restaking. Swell's [L2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2) will focus on liquid restaked assets on [EigenLayer](https://iq.wiki/wiki/eigenlayer), differing from classical [rollups](https://iq.wiki/wiki/rollup) by utilizing the \"restaked [rollup](https://iq.wiki/wiki/rollup)\" framework from [AltLayer](https://iq.wiki/wiki/altlayer). This framework includes Actively Validated Services (AVS) like decentralized sequencing, verification, and faster finality through [EigenLayer’s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/eigenlayer) restaking mechanism. [\\[11\\]](#cite-id-0l8njv81pssf)\n\nThe [rollup](https://iq.wiki/wiki/rollup) will provide Swell ecosystem participants with native restaking yield, increased scalability, lower fees, and new [DeFi](https://iq.wiki/wiki/defi) primitives. The native [gas](https://iq.wiki/wiki/gas) token will be rswETH, and the governance token will be SWELL. [Chainlink](https://iq.wiki/wiki/chainlink) will support the [L2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2), built on [Polygon’s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/polygon) [zk](https://iq.wiki/wiki/zero-knowledge-proofs-zkps)[EVM](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum-virtual-machine-evm) technology on EigenDA with [AltLayer](https://iq.wiki/wiki/altlayer). [\\[11\\]](#cite-id-0l8njv81pssf)\n\n> “Expanding Swell’s liquid restaking offerings into the L2 for restaking is the next logical step for the Swell community and DAO. This partnership aimed to create synergies between Swell’s restaked [rollup](https://iq.wiki/wiki/rollup) and [OKX’s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/okx) [Layer 2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2), both built on [Polygon’s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/polygon) CDK. These networks were designed to interoperate within a broader network of [ZK](https://iq.wiki/wiki/zero-knowledge-proofs-zkps)-powered [Layer 2s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2) through the [Polygon](https://iq.wiki/wiki/polygon) AggLayer. [\\[13\\]](#cite-id-ioshrilgeyq)\n\n## Swell Announces Sunset of Swellchain to Focus on Faro\n\nOn April 28, 2026, Swell announced that it would sunset Swellchain, its Optimism Superchain Layer 2 network, to concentrate development resources on Faro, the project’s new trading platform. The company cited changes in the blockchain landscape and a strategic shift in priorities as the primary reasons for discontinuing the network. [\\[17\\]](#cite-id-skQutgXOYbchotVx) \n\nAccording to the announcement, the restaking ecosystem had matured more slowly than anticipated, while improvements to [Ethereum’s](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) Layer 1 scalability and consistently low transaction fees had reduced the demand for certain [Layer 2](https://iq.wiki/wiki/layer-2) solutions. Swell stated that continuing to maintain Swellchain would divert engineering and business development resources away from Faro, which it identified as its primary long-term growth opportunity.\n\nUsers were instructed to withdraw all assets from Swellchain before June 15, 2026. Before bridging assets back to [Ethereum](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum), users with positions in decentralized finance applications on Swellchain, including protocols such as Tempest and Ambient, were required to unwind those positions. Asset withdrawals were facilitated through the Superbridge bridge.\n\nAs part of the shutdown timeline, deposits from Ethereum to Swellchain were disabled on May 5, 2026, preventing new funds from entering the network. June 15 marked the final recommended deadline for initiating withdrawals, after which Swell disabled its bridge interface and frontend withdrawal tools. [\\[17\\]](#cite-id-skQutgXOYbchotVx) \n\nAlthough the blockchain itself continued operating until June 30, 2026, withdrawals after June 15 required direct interaction with the underlying smart contracts and were intended only for technically experienced users. Swell warned that assets not withdrawn before the deadline might become unrecoverable.\n\nThe project emphasized that the closure affected only the Swellchain Layer 2 network. Its core Ethereum-based products, including the SWELL [ERC-20](https://iq.wiki/wiki/erc-20) token, swETH, and rswETH, continued operating normally on Ethereum.
