{"version":1,"id":"token-migration","title":"Token Migration","summary":"Token Migration is a process for transferring tokens and their holder balances from one blockchain to another, often when a project changes its blockchain or protocol.","content":"**Token migration**, also called a token swap, is the transfer of tokens and their associated holder balances from one [blockchain](https://iq.wiki/wiki/blockchain) to another as a project changes blockchains or protocols.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-pefx95d9ry)[\\[2\\]](#cite-id-qkbidpklid) \n\nIt may accompany the launch of a project’s own blockchain, a move between third-party blockchains, or a change in protocol; it does not necessarily involve a newly launched blockchain.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-pefx95d9ry)\n\n## Reasons and Context\n\nProjects may migrate to address transaction speed, fees, operating costs, performance, or security, or to adopt newer technology and tailor applications to their users.[\\[2\\]](#cite-id-qkbidpklid) \n\nA project may also move because its [blockchain](https://iq.wiki/wiki/blockchain) plans have changed or because it is switching protocols.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-pefx95d9ry)[\\[2\\]](#cite-id-qkbidpklid)\n\nA common pattern is for a project whose own blockchain is not yet available to issue tokens on an existing platform and migrate them later. During the 2018 initial coin offering boom, many projects issued [ERC-20](https://iq.wiki/wiki/erc-20) tokens on [Ethereum](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) while developing technologies that they intended to run on their own blockchains. This let investors trade the tokens while development continued, without locking up their funds.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-pefx95d9ry)\n\n## Migration Process\n\nA migration generally follows a project decision to move and requires planning for holders to exchange or transfer their tokens. Depending on the project, the exchange may happen automatically or holders may need to follow instructions from the project team.[\\[2\\]](#cite-id-qkbidpklid)\n\nHolders who keep tokens in personal wallets may need to initiate the migration through a project-provided method associated with their wallet address. \n\nWhen tokens are held on a major [cryptocurrency](https://iq.wiki/wiki/cryptocurrency) exchange, the exchange may handle the transfer for its customers.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-pefx95d9ry) Clear communication, holder education and support, and security measures are important to managing the process and reducing disruption and loss of trust.[\\[2\\]](#cite-id-qkbidpklid)\n\n## Examples\n\n* Mithril (MiTH) migrated from [Ethereum](https://iq.wiki/wiki/ethereum) to [Binance](https://iq.wiki/wiki/binance) Chain.[\\[1\\]](#cite-id-pefx95d9ry) \n* [EOS](https://iq.wiki/wiki/eos) and TRON both moved from Ethereum to their own [blockchains](https://iq.wiki/wiki/blockchain): EOS to EOSIO and TRON to its own network.[\\[2\\]](#cite-id-qkbidpklid) \n* [Tangem](https://iq.wiki/wiki/tangem) describes these moves as enabling faster operation, lower costs, and applications more tailored to each project.[\\[2\\]](#cite-id-qkbidpklid)\n","categories":[{"id":"glossary","title":"glossary"}],"tags":[],"images":[{"id":"QmXD5rXhzTiFWm5Fi2q1X7VbUdiHTJm4rtmkDXc3C5qbgN","type":"image/jpeg, image/png"}],"media":[],"metadata":[{"id":"references","value":"[{\"id\":\"pefx95d9ry\",\"url\":\"https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/token-migration\",\"description\":\"CoinMarketCap glossary\",\"timestamp\":1791899061247},{\"id\":\"qkbidpklid\",\"url\":\"https://tangem.com/en/glossary/token-migration/\",\"description\":\"Tangem glossary\",\"timestamp\":1791899061247}]"},{"id":"main-image-origin","value":"{\"imageId\":\"QmXD5rXhzTiFWm5Fi2q1X7VbUdiHTJm4rtmkDXc3C5qbgN\",\"originalId\":\"QmWi8LcDJPyGHf3JSKXN6KugchsNmCB2cSs1aNtg1otsQh\"}"},{"id":"commit-message","value":"Create the Token Migration wiki"}],"events":[],"linkedWikis":{"founders":[],"blockchains":[],"speakers":[]},"user":{"id":"0x8af7a19a26d8fbc48defb35aefb15ec8c407f889"},"author":{"id":"0x212Cb3F4aE6611054637f9f78F18fB628AD258bb"},"language":"en","operator":{"id":"0x212Cb3F4aE6611054637f9f78F18fB628AD258bb"}}
