It is used to pay [transaction fees](https://iq.wiki/wiki/transaction-fee), participate in [staking](https://iq.wiki/wiki/staking), support [validator](https://iq.wiki/wiki/validator) operations, and access governance-related functions. The token also underpins Sonic’s incentive mechanisms, including Fee Monetization, which allows developers to earn a share of the fees generated by their applications. Through these roles, S supports network security, developer participation, and on-chain economic activity across the Sonic ecosystem. [\\[2\\]](#cite-id-8aDqiwO7HK)​\n\n## Migrating & Block Rewards\n\nAs [validator](https://iq.wiki/wiki/validator) operations transition from Fantom Opera to Sonic, [validator](https://iq.wiki/wiki/validator) rewards are being reallocated accordingly. Opera [validators](https://iq.wiki/wiki/validator) were originally set to receive block rewards for several more years; however, these rewards are being gradually reduced as participants migrate to Sonic. The saved rewards are redirected to support Sonic [validators](https://iq.wiki/wiki/validator), while the Sonic Foundation continues to maintain Opera [validators](https://iq.wiki/wiki/validator) during this transition.\n\nSonic targets a 3.5% [annual percentage yield (APR)](https://iq.wiki/wiki/annual-percentage-yield-apy) for [validator](https://iq.wiki/wiki/validator) rewards. To maintain this rate without immediate inflation, block rewards from Opera’s remaining FTM supply are being transferred to Sonic. These rewards are already accounted for in Sonic’s initial token supply of 3.175 billion S tokens. At launch, the circulating supply will be approximately 2.88 billion, with the remaining tokens, around 70 million annually, allocated to validator rewards over the first four years.\n\nNo new S tokens will be minted for block rewards during this initial period.
