His early interest in software led him to operate bulletin board systems focused on game-theory modification. After emigrating to the United States with his family in 1976, Trouw continued to develop his skills in software engineering. In 1982, he worked at ZBS Industries, a video tape distributor in Cleveland, and used his earnings toward purchasing an Atari 800 computer. The following year, he worked as a caddie before creating a Bulletin Board System known as The Sidewalk. Between 1984 and 1988, he worked on projects for Zanken, a video store supplier founded by his mother. Among these projects was software for producing numbered inventory labels with Epson dot-matrix printers, which served as a basis for later work with [blockchain](https://iq.wiki/wiki/blockchain).\n\nIn 1989, Trouw worked at Sears as a catalog return clerk. In 1990, he joined BEC Computers, where he assembled and serviced computers. His employment there ended after he was accepted into the Computer Science program at the New York Institute of Technology.\n\nFrom 1991 to 1993, Trouw worked at USA Cable Network, initially performing general operational tasks before joining the engineering department. In 1993, he worked as a software developer at ChoiceCare. From 1994 to 1996, he worked at Sheridan Software, followed by a position at Greentree Technologies from 1996 to 1997. These roles included software development and work within small technology companies.\n\n#### Software Development and Consulting\n\nFrom 1997 to 1998, Trouw worked at Canon/eTree. His time at eTree included software development and collaboration with its founders. From 1998 to 2001, he worked at Bluesky Software/eHelp, initially as a Senior Software Developer and later as Program Manager. At eHelp, he was responsible for the RoboHelp product and developed RoboAssist, a FAQ system that was not fully released following a change in the company's strategy.\nBetween 2001 and 2003, Trouw worked as a contractor for GTE Interactive/Verizon, including on DSL installation software. In 2003, he and two other software contractors at Verizon developed an application firewall through SAK Labs. The software was designed to provide users with information about processes running on Windows computers and allow them to determine which processes could execute. From 2003 to 2004, he also worked as a consultant in the healthcare and financial sectors.\n\n#### Entrepreneurship\n\nBetween 2004 and 2006, Trouw worked on Hekko Education, which involved the development of a self-paced mathematics game for children. The project was later paused while he returned to consulting work. From 2006 to 2007, he worked at Tightline Technologies, initially developing the client application integration component of its poker automation software and later serving as CTO. The project ended following the enactment of the SAFE Port Act.\n\nTrouw founded Yontoo in 2008. The company developed a browser plug-in intended to allow users to modify aspects of their internet experience. He raised $350,000 from friends and family for the venture, and the platform reached more than 25 million monthly active users during its first four years. In 2012, Trouw left Yontoo, which had by then been rebranded as Sambreel. Sambreel was later sold in 2015.\n\nFrom 2008 to 2012, Trouw served as CEO and Founder of Sterkly Services, previously known as Pike Holdings. The company was among his activities in technology and entrepreneurship before his subsequent work with XY Labs.\n\n#### XY Labs and XYO\n\nTrouw founded XY Labs in 2012. The company was initially incorporated as Ength Degree, LLC and later converted to a C Corporation. He has held the roles of Entrepreneur and CEO/Founder at XY Labs.\n\nHis work with decentralized data at XY Labs included the Webble Project, which focused on linking data to physical locations through IoT devices. XY FindIt became the company's focus in 2014, resulting in the development of findable devices and applications for iOS and Android. He described XYO’s approach as using cryptographically signed sensor data and device-level blockchains to enable multiple parties and autonomous devices to exchange information without relying on a central authority. He argued that such systems could help address fragmented data environments involving IoT devices, autonomous vehicles, satellites, and future space infrastructure.\n\nTrouw also discussed the use of relative location and time data to establish relationships between devices and events without relying exclusively on centralized positioning systems. In his view, decentralized protocols could facilitate collaboration among satellites and other space-based systems operated by different organizations or countries, particularly where governance and mutual trust are limited.\n\nRegarding Mars, Trouw identified communication latency and power consumption as major technical challenges. He suggested that local blockchain-based systems could operate independently on Mars and periodically synchronize with Earth or other nearby systems, preserving continuity between otherwise separated datasets. He described data sovereignty as a model in which individuals maintain control over the storage, access, distribution, and verification of their data.
